MELISSA FIGURED she must be several shades of blue by now. She could hear her mother’s voice droning in her head, which meant she wasn’t dead yet, but she still couldn’t make herself breathe. It felt as if her lungs were caught in a vise.

“Melissa, your dad and I tried that crazy game in chapter five. What was it called, Ern? Ride the Wild Pony? He had to see the doctor for his sacroiliac, but we’re very proud of you, dear. When do we get to meet your handsome Tony?”

Dr. Love’s eyebrows shot up. “Your parents haven’t met your husband?”

Melissa let out a strangled gasp, and finally people began to realize that she was in trouble. Tony scooped her up in his arms and put her on her feet.

Dr. Love jumped up, too. “What should we do?”

“Give me some room,” Tony said, waving the host away. “We’ve been through this before. It’s her breathing.”

Melissa fell against Tony as he clamped a hand over her mouth and pinched her nose shut. Not this again! She struggled, but couldn’t break his hold. God, he was strong. She was smothering, and he was going to finish her off! Was that his plan?

Let go of me. Let go already! She couldn’t scream at him, except mentally.

She tried to step on his toe and missed. Desperate, she kicked back with her high heel, meaning to hit his shin. She hadn’t intended to hurt him, but she aimed too high.

“Oof!” Tony released her, doubling over in pain, and Melissa stumbled forward, sucking air into her lungs.

“These kids play rough,” Dr. Love said. “Time for a break, folks. When we come back, we’ll bring out our next guests—and hear this! It’s the entire cast of Girls Behaving Badly.”
